Mantel Clocks

This fine and unique clock has to be seen to fully appreciate the proportions and its stature . The clock is made from Sienna Marble and Deep black Belgium Slate , the case has been hand engraved with ancient Egyption symbols . The 8 day , bell striking hourly and half hourly movement , with an unusual indigo blue dial ground mounted with gilded Roman numerals and simple Gilded spade hands . A cast bezel surround with bevelled glass . Stamped to the backplate .Circa 1870- 1890 . With the Suez Canal opening in 1869 and the interest in Britian and France of Egyption art , this type of clock was hand made to supply a demand and 'fashion' which lasted until the First World War and then following the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 .
