Longcase Clocks

Northcote and Son , Plymouth c1780

A fine and interesting Longcase clock by Northcote and son of Plymouth. The full brass dial with strike-silent to the arch , silvered Chapter ring , seconds and name cartouche , matted centre and Blued steel hands all laid out very well . The case is a 'mellowed' Mahogany with rope string inlay and 'Plum Pudding' Mahogany cross banded Trunk door ,good Georgian Keys to both Hood and case door , Standing on bracket feet .Samuel Northcote son of a Plymouth watchmaker , and elder brother of James Northcote , the Artist , was sent to London to Thomas Mudge (inventor of the Lever escapement used in watches and clockmaker to George III ) to be instructed in Watchmaking in 1766 . ref- Britttens , Old Clocks and their Makers, published by Eyre Methuen Spon .
