Longcase Clocks

John Barrow , Londini c1695

A fine William and Mary walnut and marquetry longcase clock by one of the early respected clock makers - John Barrow , who was born 1657 just before the London plague and survived the Great fire!. He was free of the Clockmakers Company in 1681 and became a 'mCC' (Master of the Clockmakers Company) from 1714 - 1717 . The case is veneered in walnut with panels of bird and floral marquetry against an ebony ground.  There is an oval lenticle to the trunk door and the hood ( ex rising) is flanked by Barley twist columns with gilt capitals.

The eight day duration movement has five pillars and an inside locking plate with outside locking lever .  The 11 inch square dial with a finely matted centre, a silvered chapter ring and seconds dial with cherub and foliage spandrels.  There is leaf engraving between the spandrels.  The winding holes are ringed and the Calendar aperture is decorated with three engraved crowns , the original blued steel hands are finely pierced and faceted.
