The overall proportions of the clock are perfect , the balance of the silvered dial and polished quarter sound frets , the simple yet elegant hands , the mellowed mahogany case , the tuned bell strike for the hours sounding through silk backed 'fishscale' frets . The movement is deadbeat with mainainting power ,8 day of extremely high quality throughout with very substantial plates . The design is classic regency with the unfussy round dial , hand engraved with the makers names Gravell and Tolkien London and numbered . Tolkien is the great Grandfather of the author J.R.R. Tolkien (The Hobbit , Lord of the rings ) Gravell and Tolkien were the successors to the late Eardley Norton .
